2015 DHI UK & Ireland Symposium - Programme is complete and places are filling up fast!

Registration is now open for 2015 UK & Ireland Symposium!

Annual DHI UK Symposium

The dates for the 2015 DHI UK Symposium have now been confirmed as: -

Tuesday 21st April – User-led Presentations followed by the Conference Dinner
Wednesday 22nd April – Training and Innovation Seminars

We would like to welcome anyone who is interested in learning more about the varied applications of the MIKE software and our complementary technologies, as well as existing and new software users. The Symposium offers the chance to meet people in both the formal sessions, but also over dinner and during breakout sessions.

The event is free of charge* again this year and will be held at Macdonald Ansty Hall near Coventry, chosen to ensure easy access from road, rail and air. It should offer an excellent opportunity to meet your local DHI team and DHI staff from Head Office, as well as your contemporaries from consultancy, academia and research in a well-appointed setting. The presentation line up and training sessions cover a wide range of fields from urban, rivers and catchments to marine and groundwater.

We are in the process of setting up an exciting programme of events for the Seminars on the second day. This year, in readiness for the MIKE 2016 release, we will include a half day workshop on our new MIKE 21 FM Shoreline model as part of an 'Innovation in Marine Modelling' day. All participants of the Symposium will be entitled to a discount off the price of the new Shoreline Model when available.

For a successful first day, as usual, we need your help! If you would like to give a presentation at the event please let us know by e-mailing mikebydhi.uk@dhigroup.com. Everyone is welcome to present projects they have worked on, research they are undertaking – or more general experiences on the use of the MIKE software. You are guaranteed an interested and enthusiastic audience!

UK Annual Symposium 2015

Latest presentations confirmed for the MIKE by DHI Symposium on 13th May 2014

Clifford Williams (Modelling and Forecasting, Environment Agency) has kindly agreed to give a talk on 'Real Time Flood Forecasting in the Environment Agency'. In the context of the recent winter floods and storm surges, the presentation will focus upon flood forecasting systems used by the Environment Agency, how the Environment Agency interfaces with the Met Office, the hydraulic models used by the Environment Agency (incl. MIKE 11) and how the service is delivered (e.g. to Flood Resilience Teams).

Since 2002 DHI has operated an early warning system for
bathing water quality. It all began in Copenhagen when
the harbour bath was a reality, but since then the forecast
system has spread to a number of Danish and Swedish
municipalities and most recently a New Zealand municipality
has also initiated a similar system. The advantages of the
bathing water system are manifold: 1) It complies with the
EU bathing water directive, 2) it protects the public from
getting exposed to sewage water and 3) it allows the
municipalities to proactively monitor and manage the
bathing waters.
Adam Leonard-Williams (Senior Metocean Scientist, Met Office) will also be giving a presentation on 'Just how severe was the 2013/14 winter and how did the Met Office wave model perform?'. These topical presentations will be followed up within the training sessions on the second day of the conference by seminar style briefings on our own innovative forecasting technologies: -

  • Introduction to MIKE CUSTOMISED Real Time – monitoring, flood forecasting, early warning and efficient operational controls for urban and riverine environments – comprising a live demonstration of the technology, selected relevant case studies and Q&A session.
  • Introduction to a MIKE CUSTOMISED Bathing Water Forecasting System, for example http://ostjylland.badevand.dk/ (in Danish but self-explanatory!). The presentation will introduce the bathing water forecast system and the data / models needed to build a similar system. It will be followed by Q&A session.

There are now only two weeks before the 2014 MIKE by DHI UK Symposium, and it promises to be a well-supported event again this year.

The Symposium is a free-of-charge knowledge sharing event for water and environmental professionals comprising both conference-style presentations (during the User Group Meeting on the first day) and workshop-style training sessions.

As a flood professional, you may be interested in talks on 'Modelling Extreme Water Levels in the Swan and Canning Rivers in Perth, WA', 'Catchment Flood Risk Assessment and Management (CFRAM) Studies in Ireland' and 'The CORFU Flood Damage Assessment Toolbox'. The training on the second day will include the setup and review of fully integrated riverine, urban pipe & overland flow flood models.

Preparations are well under way for our 16th Annual UGM, to be held this year at the sublime Coombe Abbey in Warwickshire. If you are new to MIKE by DHI software, this annual event attracts participants from across industry and academia. The format of the meeting allows exchange of experiences through formal presentations plus informal interaction with both UK and Head Office DHI staff.

On the 13th May 2014 we look forward to a selection of presentations by both DHI staff and UK users that will introduce new features and reveal the wide range of applications of the MIKE by DHI software. Presentations confirmed to date include: -
  • From hazard to impact: The CORFU flood damage assessment tools
  • Using MIKE 21 for the estimation of typhoon risk in Japan
  • Riverine water quality modelling, with a focus on nutrients, using MIKE 11 ECO Lab
  • Modelling extreme water levels in the Swan and Canning Rivers, Perth, Western Australia

We would encourage all attendees to stay for the gala dinner in the evening of 13th May 2014, as this is a relaxed and informal opportunity to share experiences and talk through problems, debate frustrations and feature requests, and (most importantly!) include us in your discussions.

On the following day, 14th May 2014, we are planning a series of topical seminar-style training sessions and informal open discussions. For example, in the Marine training session, we hope to present a step-by-step methodology for deriving wave overtopping volumes over embankments using a 1D Boussinesq Wave (MIKE 21 BW) approach. This can be used with the enhanced MIKE 21 FMHD dike structures available in Release 2014 to investigate inland flooding (this session will be followed by an informal discussion on the direction of this development).

2014 is a special year for DHI and, during the User Group Meeting, we hope you will help us to celebrate our 50th Anniversary!

We feel that MIKE SHE, and its companion models, are ideal tools for the quantitative assessment and optimisation of land management techniques for natural flood mitigation; including the use of restored wetlands, tree planting, reconfigured flow routes, riverine buffer strips, etc. Attendees of the MIKE SHE workshop will receive a free 6-month 'commercial' evaluation licence for MIKE SHE for use on live projects.

Option 3: We would like to offer customers with valid SMA (on MIKE 21 FMHD, MIKE 3 FMHD or MIKE 21 BW) a free-of-charge copy of MIKE Animator Plus, or a 50% discount on the purchase price of the MIKE 21/3 FM ECO Lab and ABM Lab modules.

On the 25th of February, exactly half a century ago, DHI was established as The Hydraulic Engineering Institute – an offshoot of the Technical University of Denmark. Initially, the conceptual basis was to combine calculations of underwater currents with large model tests, so that the impact of waves and currents in harbours and on coasts could be explored. The first tasks included the establishment and expansion of several ports on the west coast of Jutland, Denmark.

At a time when physical models were perceived to be the only option, DHI was one of the inventors of computational hydraulics. The roots of DHI's commercial software can be traced back to 1970 - starting with System 11 and System 21 (later MIKE 11 and MIKE 21) for mainframe computers. MIKE by DHI software is still being developed and reinvented today, and is an important tool in making our 50-years of knowledge globally accessible.

River Almond Valley Water Quality Modelling Strategic Study

Atkins was commissioned to produce a dynamic water quality model of the River Almond using MIKE 11 ECO Lab. Vera Jones presents the project details which considered the impacts of Scottish Water’s local assets and identified strategies for compliance with the Water Framework Directive (WFD) and Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive (UWWTD).

Combined Thermal Plumes from Multiple Power Stations in the Arabian Gulf

George Mitchell (TechnoEconomica) and James Tomlinson (Atkins) present a discussion of the impacts of thermal discharges on sensitive flora and fauna in the Arabian Gulf, investigated using MIKE 3 FM, and outline the need for a full understanding of the relevant water column processes contributing to the thermal budget.

Shellfisheries Waters Compliance Assessments at Pegwell Bay, Kent, UK

Improvements to the waste water discharges in and around Pegwell Bay, Kent, were investigated by considering compliance with the Guideline bacteriological standard of the Shellfish Waters Directive. Jonathan Short (URS) presents the challenges and findings of the study which used MIKE by DHI software as the water quality assessment tool.

MIKE FM Series HPC trial at the University of Southampton

DHI is working with the University of Southampton, with input from ABPmer, on a UK trial of MIKE 21 FM HPC using IRIDIS (the University's 12,000 core HPC cluster). The current results, as presented by Steve Flood (DHI), are impressive.

DHI is an independent, international consulting and research organisation with the global objective of advancing technological development and competence with respect to water, in all of its environments.

Worldwide, we offer a wide range of consulting services and leading edge technologies, software tools, environmental laboratories, and physical model test facilities, as well as field surveys and monitoring programmes. Designated as a not-for-profit organisation, DHI is able to invest a considerable portion of its resources in research and development. Today we co-operate with many Universities, and research organisations, and are recognised globally for our innovation and expertise.

In the UK, DHI offers niche or specialist consultancy services in the water and environment market to government agencies, commercial entities and selected research organisations. We fulfil a research based specialist advisor role; a ‘Consultant to the Consultants’. We also supply and support the renowned MIKE by DHI suite of integrated water modelling tools.

MIKE by DHI software is the result of years of experience and dedicated development and has, in many regions, become the standard modelling tool.
