First Workshop on Numerical Geothermal Simulation at TUM

The world's water consumption rate is doubling every 20 years — twice as fast as the population growth rate. By 2025, water demand will exceed supply by 56%.

The critical need for water to sustain all aspects of human activity has driven us to inhabit floodplains and deltas close to rivers. Today, 82% of the global population lives in these areas and is exposed to a high risk of flooding.

Pushing the Boundaries – New Issues and Applications in Groundwater Modelling

DHI will be presenting at the above Groundwater Modellers' Forum event on the 13th May 2014. Roberta-Serena Blasone (DHI) will give a talk on 'Coupling groundwater and ecological models (MIKE SHE & ECO Lab)' at the conference, focussing upon: -
  • Two of the key objectives of the European Water Framework Directive (WFD) are: 1) to protect and enhance the status of aquatic ecosystems (and terrestrial ecosystems and wetlands directly dependent on aquatic ecosystems) and 2) to provide for sufficient supply of good quality surface water and groundwater as needed for sustainable, balanced and equitable water use. These requirements, together with the growing acceptance of the integrated water resource management approaches that treat catchment management holistically, provide a strong motivation to develop integrated hydrological and water quality tools that can address problems related to ecological status and restoration. In particular, managers need to be able to quantify changes in ecosystem status caused by changes in catchment management. A new and powerful eco-hydrological modelling tool has been developed, combining a generic ecological modelling tool (ECO Lab) with a fully integrated catchment modelling tool representing surface water, soil- and groundwater as well as water quality processes (MIKE SHE). This paper will present applications of this new tool to case studies involving wetland ecosystems in Denmark and the US.

The comprehensive book “FEFLOW – Finite Element Modeling of Flow, Mass and Heat Transport in Porous and Fractured Media” written by H.J. G. Diersch is now published by Springer (see the attached announcement).

It represents a theoretical textbook and covers a wide range of physical and computational issues in the field of porous/fractured-media modeling. The book starts with a more general theory for all relevant flow and transport phenomena on the basis of the continuum approach, systematically develops the basic framework for important classes of problems (e.g., multiphase/multispecies non-isothermal flow and transport phenomena, variably saturated porous media, free-surface groundwater flow, aquifer-averaged equations, discrete feature elements), introduces finite element techniques for solving the basic multidimensional balance equations, in detail discusses advanced numerical algorithms for the resulting nonlinear and linear problems, and completes with a number of benchmarks, applications and exercises to illustrate the different types of flow, mass and heat transport problems (e.g., subsurface flow and seepage problems, unsaturated-saturated flow, advective-diffusion transport, saltwater intrusion, geothermal and thermohaline flow).

The book is general and will be useful for both students and practitioners in engineering and geosciences as well as in other fields where porous-media flow dynamics and computational methods are of specific concern.

Cost-optimised miniature sensors for online monitoring

DHI Sense is a new series of cost-optimised, mini-sensors for monitoring in water environments. It was developed in cooperation between DHI Denmark and DHI Singapore. The system design is aimed at optimising the value of measurement campaigns by increasing the number of sensors, while maintaining the overall cost of the operation.

Traditionally, very expensive, high-end scientific sensors have been used for marine monitoring. This has limited the number of stations that could be deployed during a measurement campaign. With DHI Sense, it is possible to deploy a network of numerous sensors at a comparable cost, without compromising the data quality. DHI Sense provides a new method for measurements where sensors are connected in a Master/Slave configuration. This is capable of controlling, processing and transmitting of online data from a large variety of sensors.

Data is by default stored locally on a Secure Digital Card. When configured for online operation, data – or a subset of data – is transferred to our Data Integration Management System (DIMS.CORE).

The use of 3D numerical modelling in groundwater research and water quality risk assessment

Matrix Solutions Inc. in Canada is using MIKE by DHI numerical modelling for ground-breaking research and valuable solutions for their clients. Two recent examples are: -

Feasibility study estimating lithium and potash rich brine deposit reserves
Matrix Solutions developed a 3D numerical modelling tool using among others FEFLOW to represent the complex groundwater flow system and evaluate various wellfield strategies. Using FEFLOW to develop their numerical model, Matrix Solutions was able to significantly reduce simulation time and reach a conclusion supporting a long time and low cost mining operation.

The importance of groundwater–surface water interaction in water resource assessments
In order to better understand and assess the groundwater –surface water interaction, Matrix Solutions applied our integrated modelling software MIKE SHE to two municipal water quality risk assessments in order to evaluate the sustainability of municipal water withdrawals.

Integrated Surface and Groundwater Model Review and Technical Guide

The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources has published a guideline report evaluating the applicability of integrated surface and groundwater hydrologic models including MIKE SHE, GSFLOW, and HYDROGEOSPHERE. While tailored to Ontario watersheds, UK users of MIKE SHE may find the report of interest.

"While integrated models are able to provide a more complete representation of hydrologic processes, they have not yet seen widespread application within Ontario. To address this knowledge gap, the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources initiated a study to determine the applicability of integrated hydrologic models to Ontario watersheds. The report includes: a qualitative comparison of several integrated model codes; the application of multiple integrated model codes to two case-study watersheds; and guidance to water resource practitioners on how to develop and calibrate an integrated model." from WaterBudget.ca (2011)

Hands on FEFLOW training 26th – 27th October 2011

ESI, in conjunction with DHI-WASY, have announced a 2 day FEFLOW training course in Shrewsbury on 26th and 27th October 2011 aimed at giving both an insight and training into the effective utilisation of FEFLOW simulation modelling software: -
  • Hands on introduction to modelling with FEFLOW: 26th October 2011
  • Focus on FEFLOW modelling for Ground Source Energy: 27th October 2011
FEFLOW is a finite element software package for modelling fluid flow and transport of dissolved constituents and/or heat transport processes in the ground. The finite element discretisation enables the user to build complex unstructured meshes that closely match natural structures.

Modelling to support the Water Framework Directive and integrated catchment management

The Water Framework Directive is a key driver of environmental management with its fundamental objective to maintain, and prevent the deterioration of, surface water and groundwater quantitative and qualitative “high status”. This requires that EU Member States ensure that a co-ordinated approach to water management is adopted. As part of this, better conceptual and mathematical models are required to assess the impact of any proposed changes in catchment management on, for example, groundwater and surface water quality. Such modelling will inform catchment management and policy but is only likely to be effective if deemed to be valid by all of the relevant stakeholders.

Aims of the workshop

This workshop will explore these issues by considering what the current gaps in knowledge are, what existing methods and models are useful for integrated catchment management, what improvements in conceptual and numerical modelling are required, and how models can provide evidence to stakeholders to support changes in management practice. The meeting will focus on these challenges within the context of the DEFRA Demonstration Test Catchments initiative and agricultural diffuse water pollution.
